A Little Bit About Me

Hi, my name is Iain Chalmers.

I’m lucky enough to live in the beautiful Scottish Highlands near Culbokie , with my wife Mairi and our two sons Ewan and Robbie.

What started out as a bet with a forestry student as to who could carve the best mushroom, has now grown into a full time job for me. I feel like the luckiest guy in the world as so few people can earn a living doing what they love.

I actually started out my working life as a chef which I loved but after five years of unsociable hours I decided it was time for a change. I was offered a job in forestry , which I gratefully accepted, never thinking it would turn into a career.

I spent 8 years felling commercially until hand cutting gradually disappeared with the onset of the timber harvesters. I then turned to growing xmas trees, working for a Danish firm for 6 years, looking after around 5 million of them! It was around this time that I started carving as a hobby, mainly in the evenings and at weekends until it came to the point where I couldn’t keep up with the orders anymore. So I decided to take the chance and try carving full time and I haven’t looked back since.

What I love about carving is that as long as you can fit it into a log, then there is no end to what can be created. From birds, animals and wildlife to people, abstracts even vehicles. The possibilities are endless, and I love a challenge.

I now spend my time mainly carving commissions but occasionally on-site carvings, where people have had a tree removed and leave me the stump to carve. I also travel Britain throughout the summer months doing shows and exhibitions.
